Diminished Scales

What are Diminished Scales?

Diminished scales are octatonic (eight-note) scales that are surprisingly common and useful in jazz improvisation. These are excellent to apply different scale shapes to (refer to my Jazz Improvisation Course). The diminished scales outline fully diminished seven chords, so the C diminished scales outline Cdim7 (C-Eb-Gb-Bbb) while filling in a note in between each of these chord tones. The scale is comprised of alternating half and whole steps.
